Albany State University

Albany State University (ASU), a four-year institution, fosters the growth and development of Southwest Georgia and the state through teaching/learning, research, creative expression and public service. The University offers baccalaureate, master's and educational specialist degrees and specialized educational programs. Through its teaching, research and service, and collaboration with other institutions, the University anticipates and responds to the needs of its constituents; and it enhances the quality of life of its publics through advocacy of educational, cultural, artistic and social development in the region.

The University values liberal arts as a foundation for all learning. Student learning encompasses the ideas, values and knowledge of the disciplines of the liberal arts and sciences. Through interdisciplinary instructional delivery, the University promotes independent and collaborative learning.

  • Both traditional and non-traditional students make up the more than 4,000 students who attend Albany State. They come primarily from southwest and middle Georgia, Atlanta, other states in the U.S., and several foreign countries.
  • Albany State offers more than 30 undergraduate degree programs, of which the most popular majors are biology, criminal justice, computer science, middle-grades education, business administration and nursing.
  • The University offers six advanced degrees: the master of science in criminal justice, master of public administration, master of business administration, master of science in nursing, master of education in 11 majors, and an education specialist degree.
  • The university also offers the Board of Regents' engineering transfer program and the dual degree program in engineering with Georgia Tech.
  • ASU had an economic impact of more than $137.7 million during FY 2010.

Summer Success Academy (Albany State University-2024)

The Summer Success Academy is a 6-week residential learning opportunity that provides incoming freshmen with the ability to get a jump start on their ASU experience. Student participants are enrolled in 7-9 hours depending on their cohort. Working closely with expert faculty and supported by a network of peer advisors, learning specialists, and tutors, Academy scholars learn together as a community within and beyond the classroom.

Campus-Wide Advising Model (Albany State University-2024)

The Campus-Wide Advising Model activity is designed to effectively communicate to students the requirements to earn a degree. Implementing this campus-wide model will position Professional Advisors (PA) as the first point of contact for admitted students who are interested in any program at ASU. PA’s understanding of the programs allows them to clearly, succinctly, and thoroughly inform students of course overviews, petitioning deadlines, prerequisite courses, GPA minimums, and if applicable clinicals, internships, and program specific standardized exams.

Freshmen Learning Communities (University College) (Albany State University-2024)

The Learning Communities (LCs) in which two or more courses are linked thematically with collaborative instruction and co-curricular activities. These courses, and their faculty, focus on core areas as well as areas of academic performance, retention, student mindset, and degree progression. LCs at ASU will provide an easier platform of transition to ASU students while providing a supportive network of peers, mentors, professors, success services, and more.

Lead and Peer Tutors (Albany State University-2024)

Lead tutors, professionals within the community, play a crucial role in the Writing and Math Centers, providing expert assistance to students. Peer Tutors, currently enrolled students who have excelled in their subjects with an A or B+, are well-equipped to confidently assist students in various subject areas. The goal of Lead and Peer Tutors is to help build confidence with the student learners and equip them with learning strategies that will enable them to complete a class assignment, test, mid or final exams.

Study Tables (Albany State University-2024)

Study table is an opportunity for students to have access to our faculty for assistance in various academic subjects. This is designed to help students clarify subject questions and enhance their understanding of course materials. This is offered to students 3 nights a week from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. During this time learning may be provided to students in a group or one on one sessions. Different learning strategies are introduced to help aid students in the learning process.

Tutor on-Demand and Study Table (Albany State University-2023)

Tutoring On-Demand (TOD) and Study Table services are available to students to aid in increasing academic support either in person or online.  The modality for this instruction may include one-on-one or group sessions in person or the integration of virtual tutoring via TOD.  These different modalities provide student access to academic resources that will help to increase their ability to engage in classroom learning and retain the content of the subject matter. 

Freshman Residence Hall Tutoring (Albany State University-2023)

The Freshman Residence Hall Tutoring activity aims to expand and strengthen academic and student services and resources while improving Freshman student persistence and success by way of implementing embedded in-hall residence learning and engagement opportunities.  The purpose of in-hall tutoring is to more efficiently respond to the needs of ASU’s Freshman student body by housing, in Freshman residence halls, crucial academic and student support services.  ASU currently provides academic support services for students that include Math and Writing Centers, tutoring services, and student su

Supplemental Instruction and Teaching Assistantship (Albany State University-2023)

The Supplemental Instruction and Teaching Assistantship activity will provide mandatory, voluntary, and integrated academic support services, internal and external to the classroom.  Supplemental Instruction (SI) will offer a form of tutoring that focuses on group study and collaboration.  Supplemental Instruction is a critical component for university college Learning Communities
